The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies Programme is hosted by the Department of English Language and Literature. This Programme is designed in response to the network culture of the 21st century where interconnectedness becomes a new model for education, particularly in higher education systems. There are now many cross-disciplinary academic programmes in universities all over the world which endeavor to develop their study-areas right at the interface between existing modes of knowledge ‘owned’ by separate departments. The design of all the courses in the Programme has adopted an interdisciplinary approach which aims to create interdisciplinary knowledge between science and humanities, science and philosophy, language and literature, literature and visual arts, ecology and humanities, etc.

Applicants for admission to the Master of Social Sciences (Counselling Psychology) Programme must either1. be in possession of a Bachelor's degree with first or second class honours in Psychology from a recognized local or overseas university OR2. be in possession of a Bachelor's degree with first or second class honours in fields other than Psychology, AND have completed a post- graduate conversion programme in Psychology (e.g. Master of Social Sciences in Psychology etc)Applicants are subject to psychological tests, English writing tests, and are required to attend individual and group interviews.
The Master of Social Sciences in Counselling Psychology is a professional degree that qualifies graduates for registration with professional associations. The programme is designed to create a distinct professional identity for Counselling Psychologists, and to contribution toward meeting the currently psychological needs within the community.
Language Requirements
Applicants with entrance qualifications from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfil the following minimum English proficiency requirement:
(a) Overall score ≥ 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic); or
(b) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 600 (Paper-based Test) or 100 (Internet-based Test) or 250 (Computer-based Test); or
(c) Other equivalent qualifications acceptable to the University.
Candidates must i. have earned a bachelor’s degree with Second Class Honours or above from an accredited university in an area other than psychology, ANDii. pass a take home entrance examination on Introductory Psychology composed primarily of multiple-choice and essay questions, ANDiii. attend an interview.
The Master of Social Sciences in Psychology sets out to provide an education for students who are holders of Bachelor's degrees with Honours in fields other than psychology who have an interest in gaining psychological knowledge. It will also serve as the first step for those who intend to pursue Master's level education or above in the field of psychology in Hong Kong or overseas (e.g. Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, etc.)
Fluency in English and Chinese, in both oral and written forms, is mandatory. For applicants from outside Hong Kong, an IELTS of 6.5; or TOEFL not lower than 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test) or 100 (internet-based); or equivalent (CET 6:450) is required to prove proficiency in English.
Applicants should have at least a second-class honours degree or an equivalent qualification from a university or comparable institution. Those with a background in social sciences and/or humanities will be given preference.
The Master of Social Sciences (Transformation of Chinese Societies) is designed to explore the transformation of cultural practices and social values brought about by state and market. To facilitate the in-depth investigation of these phenomena, the program is divided into two domains. One domain focuses on changing social values and morality; how they are shaped by institutional transformation and how individual citizens adjust themselves within the social structure amid rapid and radical social change. The other domain considers how traditional cultural practices have been preserved, recycled or transformed in a process of commoditization and politicization. It also examines the popularization of consumerist activities and the relationship between culture and consumption.
Applicants should be degree holders or graduates of Shue Yan University. Those with a background equivalent to Shue Yan's four-year undergraduate program will be considered to have equivalent qualifications of a Bachelor's degree.
