The Urban Design and Planning major focuses on the interaction between planning, geography and environmental design. Urban Design and Planning is founded on the social, environmental, political, aesthetic and economic importance of design and planning in the public realm. The major allows you to explore urban design (the shaping of urban space) and urban planning (the strategic and regulatory mediation of urban change), while also taking subjects in urban geography.

Develop the practical skills to grow, manage and design with horticultural plants at the traditional home of horticulture in Australia. The Associate Degree in Environmental Horticulture is delivered from the beautiful nine hectares of heritage-listed gardens at Burnley campus. Burnley has been teaching horticulture since 1891. You will receive a strong technical and theoretical foundation in ecology, plant science and sustainable horticulture, supported by studies in communications, business management, staff supervision, occupational health and safety and first aid. The course includes an eight-week industry placement, where you will complete a work program in the horticulture industry under the guidance of trained professionals.

Animation at the VCA has a long-running, world-class reputation. We produce graduates who light up animated screens around the world, and we invite you to join our creative team. Since 1968, Animation graduates of the VCA’s School of Film and Television have been keenly sought after to produce animated works for television series, short films and feature-length animations. Many also apply their animation skills to video art and installation, websites, games and educational programs

The Dance specialisation in the Bachelor of Fine Arts builds on the VCA's outstanding reputation for performance-focused dance training. It attracts highly motivated dancers who are willing to meet the program’s technical demands and creative challenges. The integrated dance curriculum develops technically strong, kinaesthetically aware dance artists and provides the foundation for an autonomous and sustainable career in dance. It is designed to develop and challenge your technical, creative and analytic abilities through specialist training in contemporary dance, classical ballet, dance science and somatic practices, choreography, and performance.

The Film and Television specialisation in the Bachelor of Fine Arts gives you the skills to create screen programs to a high artistic and technical standard. Throughout the degree you will attend lectures, workshops and masterclasses to develop your creative, technical and analytical skills. You will write, direct and edit your own work and also crew on fellow student productions. A large component of the degree is focused on practical screen production, with an emphasis on screenwriting, direction and editing. You will be encouraged to be innovative and experimental, to explore ideas and develop the expertise to express ideas for an audience.

The Music Theatre specialisation in the Bachelor of Fine Arts is designed as an intensive, skills-building program that produces performers with a strong sense of individual expression. You will receive extensive practical training in music theatre’s principal disciplines of singing, acting and dance as individual crafts, and in combination for holistic music theatre performance. You can apply these skills in public showings from second year, with fully staged performances towards the end of the degree culminating in an industry showcase for agents, directors and producers.

The Production specialisation in the Bachelor of Fine Arts trains you to design, create, operate and manage in your chosen area of production. This vocationally oriented degree teaches all aspects of production including set, costume, lighting, audio and vision technology and design, workshop and costume construction and stage management. You will apply knowledge gained in studio classes to practical projects generated both within and beyond the VCA. Given the broad span of work within the VCA, you will have the opportunity to work in a range of capacities for our productions, including dance, theatre and music theatre as well as one-off events.

The Screenwriting specialisation is designed for those who have the desire and talent to write audience-driven stories for the screen. Since its creation in 1966, the VCA’s School of Film and Television has included screenwriting as the central element in all of its programs. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Screenwriting) is the first dedicated undergraduate screenwriting degree in Australia. It trains students in the many facets of screenwriting through lectures, classes, film screenings, onset experience and intensive modules.

The Theatre Practice specialisation in the Bachelor of Fine Arts is an intensive actor training program that will develop you into an autonomous actor who is able to interpret established texts as well as generate and perform new material. In the first year you integrate imagination, voice and body skills and apply these in a range of performance contexts. You explore creating performance from the self and develop strategies for the interpretation of text. The second year continues to develop your kinaesthetic and perceptual awareness in performance. You learn to work within a production process from conception through to rehearsal and performance.

The Visual Art specialisation in the Bachelor of Fine Arts offers an immersive, studio-based environment that fosters self-directed studio practice in the areas of drawing and print media, painting, photography, or sculpture and spatial practice. The program creates an environment that fosters the advancement of practice and theory in the visual arts. From the outset, you are expected to develop studio projects that require investigation and experimentation with a range of concepts, materials, techniques and processes. Your studies will culminate in a resolved body of artwork for inclusion in the Graduate Exhibition at the conclusion of the degree.
